La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nayarit's fishing tradition
One of the great advantages of staying at Grand Matlali Hills Resort & Spa is the proximity to the most visited points of interest, towns and beaches of Riviera Nayarit; you can use our hotel as a starting point to explore what the region brings.
2 km from the hotel you will find La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, a traditional fishing village of approximately 1,600 residents. In the streets you can feel the atmosphere of a traditional beach town, with friendly and relaxed people. The beaches of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle are famous for their tranquility, making them excellent for swimming and fun.
In La Cruz, as it is known by the locals, you will find the sea market, a place where you can find fresh fish and seafood from which the main restaurants and hotels in the region are supplied. If you go early in the morning you can watch the locals arrive in their boats with the catch of the day such as marlin, dorado and tuna.
In 2008 the dock at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle was totally renovated to be converted into a marina for 340 vessels from 31 to 400 feet long. While walking through the “Marina Nayarit” you will see everything from motorboats to large sport yachts equipped with the latest in maritime navigation technology.
You can walk around La Cruz and then go to cool off at our Eva Mandarina Beach Club, which is located on one of the beaches of this town.
Bucerías Nayarit, for dining and water sports
A few minutes drive from Grand Matlali Hills Resort & Spa, is the town of Bucerías, Nayarit. Bucerías means place of divers, derived from the town's long tradition of harvesting oysters. On the boardwalk, near the main square you will find a monument to this tradition.
Bucerias enjoys an unbeatable climate for most of the world, which has made it a favorite retirement spot for U.S. citizens, Canadians and others from around the world. When visiting Bucerías you will find a multicultural environment, where traditional Mexican architecture merges with the tastes of foreign residents, resulting in a multicolored mosaic that is very pleasant to observe.
Bucerias beach is excellent for recreational activities; the shallow depth of the beach allows people traveling with children to let the little ones have their first contact with the sea without excessive danger. Another of the characteristics that make Bucerías beach stand out is the wind, the speed with which it runs makes this beach an excellent place to practice sailing or kite surfing. In fact, Bucerías hosts the Festival del Viento (Wind Festival), water sports competition with great prestige among its participants.
